“Solidarity with Ukraine”: Exhibition by Ukrainian Post Office on view at NSK by 15 Sep 2024

By 15 September 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) is hosting the Solidarity with Ukraine exhibition, organised by the Ukrainian Post Office in cooperation with the Croatian Post Office and Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and featuring the postage stamps issued in support of Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression.
Prepared by the Ukrainian Post Office as a way of expressing Ukraine’s gratitude to countries whose general post offices launched special postage stamps symbolising their countries’ solidarity with Ukraine in its struggle for freedom, the Solidarity with Ukraine exhibition features the stamps issued by 15 countries. Included among the displayed stamps is the stamp which the Croatian Post Office issued in April 2022, featuring an inscription which reads For peace in Ukraine (Za mir u Ukrajini).

NSK taking a stand for Ukraine
Since 24 February 2022, when the Russian Federation launched its invasion of Ukraine, NSK has been undertaking various initiatives to express its support for and solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Wishing to be practical in its concern for the preservation of Ukraine’s heritage, in March 2022 the Library published three special bibliographies bringing together the titles in the Library’s collections related to Ukraine and the Ukrainian language – the titles published in Ukraine (Bibliografija građe objavljene u Ukrajini u fondu NSK), titles in the Ukrainian language (Bibliografija građe na ukrajinskom jeziku u fondu NSK) and the titles which are the translations of works originally in Ukrainian into other languages, including English (Bibliografija građe prevedene s ukrajinskog jezika u fondu NSK).
Apart from the translations into Ukrainian of works by canonical Croatian writers, such as Miroslav Krleža and Tin Ujević, notable works by Ivo Brešan, Miljenko Jergović, Dubravka Ugrešić and other contemporary Croatian writers, valuable resources in these bibliographies include literary and scientific works by Ukrainian authors of which Kobzar, the 1840 poetry collection by the giant of Ukrainian cultural heritage Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko, particularly stands out. Available in English are the works by contemporary Ukrainian writers such as Kateryna Kalytko and Yurii Ihorovych Andrukhovych, the winners of the 2017 and 2018 BBC News Ukraine Book of the Year Award, respectively.
Also in March 2022, the Library started providing its services free of charge to Ukrainian refugees, while the Croatian Web Archive, operating as part of the Library, began collecting online content on the war in Ukraine as part of a special thematic collection published on the Archive’s website in May 2022.
Helping make Ukrainian heritage available in libraries around the world
In June 2022, the Library joined a humanitarian initiative led by AidHub Foundation aimed at providing the Ukrainian refugees with publications in their own language by making available the titles of Ukrainian publishers in Croatian public libraries, and in July 2022, as part of an initiative to make Ukrainian books available in libraries around the world, the Library received from the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Croatia His Excellency Mr Vasyl Kyrylych 200 titles in the Ukrainian language, titles by Ukrainian authors translated into Croatian and Croatian titles thematising Ukraine.

Determined to keep demonstrating its firm support for Ukrainian librarians and information professionals in their efforts to preserve their collections, fight against disinformation and help Ukraine’s struggle against the aggression, NSK will continue to support all such efforts.
