NSK hosts 2024 regional meeting of e-resources purchasing consortia

On 28 May 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the 2024 regional meeting of seven e-resources library purchasing consortia from central and eastern Europe.
After all previous such regional meetings were held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, NSK hosted the 2024 meeting, which apart from the representatives of the Hungarian and Croatian consortia brought together the representatives of another five library consortia – Austrian, Czech, Romanian, Slovak and Slovenian.
Library consortia up against new challenges
Traditionally organised by the Hungarian Academy’s Electronic Information Service National Programme, these regional meetings thematise challenges which e-resources library purchasing consortia are facing as a result of the rise of open access policies and the growth of open science. With academic publishing being confronted by numerous and rapid changes owing to the increase in the number of e-resources and their prices, technological changes and the changing information needs of its users, the joining of forces between libraries and library consortia and providing opportunities for them to exchange experiences in this context is today more important than ever.

Transformative agreements, APCs and AI
Along with presenting the organisational structure of their library consortia and the latest developments in their work in the past year, the consortia’s representatives discussed issues concerning transformative agreements, related open access policies and paper publication costs, the co-called article processing charges, public procurement procedures, price negotiation process and ways of promoting the consortia’s work and e-resources use.
The debate held as part of the programme and moderated by the NSK e-Resources Adviser Alisa Martek also covered issues surrounding artificial intelligence, which is increasingly becoming a dominant topic in academic publishing.
The 2025 meeting will be hosted by ANELIS PLUS, the Romanian e-resources purchasing consortium.
