“Heritage at Hand at CroAtrium” opening soon with 16th-century cartographic treasures in the spotlight
14 April 2025, 12.00, CroAtrium

On 14 April 2025 (12.00, Conference Hall Judita), the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will open Heritage at Hand at CroAtrium, a 2025 programme aimed at the popularisation of Croatian cultural heritage which the Library preserves as part of Croatica, Croatia’s national library collection.
Starting with a lecture by historian and geographer Dr Dubravka Mlinarić from the Croatian Institute for Migration Research (IMIN), the Heritage at Hand programme will first spotlight the invaluable 16th-century cartographic material documenting Croatian statehood (Dokumentiranje hrvatske državnosti u radovima srednjoeuropskih kartografa 16. stoljeća).
CroAtrium – bringing Croatian heritage closer to everyone
Wishing to immerse the programme participants in the fascinating world of 16th-century cartographers Lazarus Secretarius and Wolfgang Lazius, Dr Mlinarić will present the lecture at CroAtrium, which offers NSK’s users, visitors and the general public opportunities to interact with the treasures making Croatica, curated by NSK as the Croatian national library collection.
Being among the rare examples of preserved cartographic material showing eastern Croatian regions from the period after the Battle of Mohács (1526) and the Ottoman invasion, Secretarius’s and Lazius’s works are particularly valuable as records chronicling Croatian statehood.
In a follow-up to the lecture the programme visitors will be able to see first-hand a selection of maps from the NSK Map Collection, which along with all types of maps, charts and atlases holds over thirty 16th-century maps showing Croatia’s mainland.
