By 26 January 2026, the August \u0160enoa Croatian community club in P\u00e9cs<\/a> will be hosting Faust Vran\u010di\u0107 \u2013 the Croatian Leonardo da Vinci<\/a><\/em>, a joint exhibition of the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)<\/a> about a world-famous Croatian humanist, inventor, diplomat and bishop Faust Vran\u010di\u0107 (Faustus Verantius).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marking the 34th<\/sup> anniversary of Croatia\u2019s international recognition, the exhibition has been organised through the club\u2019s cooperation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the exhibition\u2019s opening on 12 January, the visitors heard addresses by the Consul General Drago Horvat and the club\u2019s Director Mi\u0161o \u0160aro\u0161ac, while the Senior Research Associate at the Division for the History of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at the Academy\u2019s Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science Dr Marijana Bori\u0107, the author of the exhibition, presented in greater detail Vran\u010di\u0107\u2019s life and achievements, along with the valuable material from the <\/a>NSK collections<\/a> used in the exhibition\u2019s preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faust Vran\u010di\u0107, a true homo universalis<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Above all famous for his visionary ideas, Vran\u010di\u0107 truly embodied the ability and versatility of \u201cthe Renaissance man\u201d. A true homo universalis<\/em>, he was an inventor, engineer, writer of technical treatises and lexicographer, as well as the author of works in the fields of philosophy, literature and historiography, owing to all of which he has rightfully been dubbed \u201cthe Croatian Leonardo da Vinci\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dictionarium quinque nobilissimarum Europae linguarum<\/a><\/em> (Venice, 1595), Faust Vran\u010di\u0107\u2019s dictionary of the five most prominent languages of Europe and a fundamental work of Croatian lexicography, and Machinae novae<\/a><\/em> (Venice, 1615\/16), a gem of European 17th<\/sup>-century technical literature.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Machinae novae<\/a><\/em> (Venice, 1615\/16), a gem of European 17th<\/sup>-century technical literature and Vran\u010di\u0107\u2019s major work, enriched the corpus of technical treatises of the Renaissance period not only by introducing entirely new ideas, but by presenting numerous improvements which perfected the performance and advanced the functionality of the already existing constructions and devices. In this context, Vran\u010di\u0107\u2019s Homo volans<\/a><\/em>, the first published technical description of the parachute in the history of technical literature, particularly stands out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
