On 24 October 2023, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the presentation of the 2023 facsimile edition of a 16th<\/sup>-century masterpiece of Croatian Glagolitic heritage, an invaluable breviary entitled Officium parvum Beatae Mariae Virginis<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accompanied by the Latin transliteration and presented as part of the 2023 Croatian Book Month<\/a>, the facsimile edition was jointly published by NSK and the Rijeka University Library<\/a>, with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a> and University of Rijeka<\/a>, whose Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will host the facsimile\u2019s subsequent presentation on 10 November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facsimile was presented by its editor-in-chief, Professor at the Department of Croatian Studies of the University of Rijeka\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a> Sanja Zub\u010di\u0107 and the facsimile\u2019s consulting editors \u2013 Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts<\/a> and Professor at the Section for Old Church Slavonic and Croatian Glagolitic Heritage of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the University of Zagreb\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a> Mateo \u017dagar and Assistant Professor at the Department of Croatian Language and Literature of the University of Osijek\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a> Vera Bla\u017eevi\u0107 Krezi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pride of the NSK collections<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Officium<\/em>\u2019s original copy, published on 15 December 1530 by Rijeka\u2019s historic printing house run by the Bishop of Modru\u0161 \u0160imun Ko\u017ei\u010di\u0107 Benja (1460-1536) and preserved at the Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a> of the National and University Library in Zagreb as one of only seven copies in the world, was presented by the Head of the Collection Dr Irena Gali\u0107 Be\u0161ker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Anica Nazor briefly spoke about \u0160imun Ko\u017ei\u010di\u0107 Benja, Officium<\/em>\u2019s compiler and an advanced European humanist whose efforts put Rijeka<\/a> on the map of Europe as one of only few cities at the beginning of the 16th<\/sup> century which boasted lively publishing activity and kept abreast of all trends in the publishing innovations and technologies of that age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visitors at the presentation programme also heard addresses by the Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) Dr Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107, Director of the Rijeka University Library<\/a> Lea Lazzarich and Director of the Directorate for Archives, Libraries and Museums at the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a> Anu\u0161ka Deranja Crnoki\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOfficium\u2026\u201d is the first dated book of the historic Glagolitic printing house in Rijeka and one of its only few preserved copies in the world is among the treasures of our library\u2019s Manuscripts and Old Books Collection. These facts gave rise to a natural and \u2013 as already shown in the past<\/a> \u2013 highly successful interinstitutional publishing undertaking of the Rijeka University Library and the National and University Library in Zagreb aimed at the promotion of Croatian cultural heritage.<\/em>, said NSK Director General Dr Stri\u010devi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A result of effective teamwork<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The team which prepared the facsimile and Officium<\/em>\u2019s accompanying Latin transliteration, printed by the Rijeka-based printing company Welt in a print run of 300 copies, also included executive editor Dobrila Zvonarek, who moderated the presentation programme, Research Associate at the Old Church Slavonic Institute<\/a> Jozo Vela, the editor of Officium<\/em>\u2019s Latin transliteration, the author of the facsimile\u2019s cover Frano Paro, art editor Dalibor Feren\u010dina and graphic designer Goran Hasanec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media and University of Rijeka, financial support for the publication of the facsimile and its Latin transliteration was also provided by Primorje-Gorski Kotar County<\/a>, Diocese of Gospi\u0107 and Senj<\/a>, Archdiocese of Rijeka<\/a>, Trsat Franciscian Monastery<\/a> and the Foundation of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
