From 24 October to 7 November 2025, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will put on Marginalia, in the focus<\/em>, an exhibition spotlighting the secrets of the notes and other marks in the margins of items in the Library\u2019s collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authored by members of the NSK staff art historian and curator Iva Perini\u0107 and heritage collections specialist Ivan Volarevi\u0107, the exhibition was prepared with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a> and will be held as part of the 2025 Croatian Book Month. It will feature the wealth and diversity of marginalia in various languages and scripts included in a wide variety of the Library\u2019s holdings<\/a>, ranging from works of the medieval period preserved as part of the Library\u2019s Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection<\/a> and Map Collection<\/a> to more recent and contemporary content from the NSK Music Collection<\/a> and Print Collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marginalia all over the place \u2013 from historic books to digital content<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Presenting notes, drawings, remarks and comments (ranging from interesting to rather unconventional), as well as elaborate sketches, the exhibition material includes 15th<\/sup>-17th<\/sup>-century books, contemporary examples in textbooks, published research and literary works, cartographic resources, sheet music, prints and digital content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the works with most valuable examples of marginalia are the 16th<\/sup>-century transcript of the 1288\u00a0Croatian codex constituting the second oldest Slavic legal text<\/a> and\u00a0the 1513 edition of Naturalis historia<\/a><\/em>, by Pliny the Elder, the most comprehensive work surviving from the ancient Roman period, including the 20th<\/sup>-century notes on the 18th<\/sup>-century plan<\/a> for the historic Osijek<\/a> fortress (Tvr\u0111a) and the city walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Representing the most recent examples are the comments that the followers of the NSK pages and profiles on social media left to the Library\u2019s post about its exhibition marking 70 years of Croatia\u2019s iconic teenage magazine<\/a>, showing how the universal human need for expressing one\u2019s thoughts and emotions, in particular during one\u2019s interaction with cultural artefacts, got new forms with the arrival of the digital age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the authors, the exhibition will be presented by the NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107, Professor at the University of Zagreb\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Jelena Laku\u0161 and Dr Tomislav Mati\u0107, from the Croatian Institute of History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
