On 3 December 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the opening The Golden Age of the Fountain Pen in NSK Manuscripts<\/em> exhibition, the final event of the Library\u2019s programme marking the 130th<\/sup> anniversary<\/a> of the founding of the Library\u2019s Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a>, NSK\u2019s oldest special collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organised with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a> and remaining on view by 15 December 2024, the exhibition spotlights the Collection\u2019s treasures such as the autograph manuscripts of the world-famous Croatian writer <\/a>Miroslav Krle\u017ea (1893-1981)<\/a>, letters of the internationally acclaimed Croatian sculptor Ivan Me\u0161trovi\u0107 (1883-1962)<\/a> and those of Albert Einstein to Croatian world-renowned mathematician Vladimir Vari\u0107ak, using this valuable material in giving an overview of the development throughout history of the fountain pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An homage to Its Majesty the Fountain Pen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition opened with a welcome address by the NSK Director General Professor Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107 and an introduction by the Head of the NSK Manuscripts and Old Books Collection Dr Irena Gali\u0107 Be\u0161ker, who both emphasised the Collection\u2019s importance as the treasure trove of some of the most valuable works of Croatian written heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the addresses by the authors of the exhibition Ivan Kapec and Iva Perini\u0107, who are also the members of the Collection\u2019s staff, the present visitors heard an inspired performance by Branimir Norac of Ap\u00f3spasma Philokt\u1e17tou<\/em>, written exclusively for the exhibition\u2019s opening by vibraphone player and composer \u0160imun Mati\u0161i\u0107, who donated the composition\u2019s autograph manuscript written with a fountain pen to the NSK Music Collection<\/a>, some of whose manuscript treasures are also displayed as part of the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last to address the visitors at the opening was a renowned writing implement designer Vladimir Vali\u0107, whose brilliant portfolio includes the fountain pens that he exclusively designed for the Pope, Michael Schumacher, Quincy Jones, Pablo Coelho, the members of the Queen <\/em>band and other celebrities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The art of constructing fountain pens \u2013 and the magic of writing with them<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The visitors at the opening had the opportunity to learn more about the construction of fountain pens as well as about the technique that writing with a fountain pen requires and try themselves at it in a workshop. Held in cooperation with Torpedo GB<\/a>, a Rijeka-based writing implements manufacturer whose team includes Mr Vali\u0107, the workshop was part of the exhibition programme focusing on the main inventors and patents owing to which this sophisticated 19th<\/sup>-century innovation revolutionised the technology of writing and thus significantly sped up the exchange of information, data, ideas and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the valuable manuscripts by the canonical Croatian writers Tin Ujevi\u0107, Antun Gustav Mato\u0161 and Antun Branko \u0160imi\u0107<\/a>, composers Jakov Gotovac, Fran Lhotka and Ivan Brkanovi\u0107, as well as physician and researcher Zora Vone\u0161, also displayed as part of the exhibition are the fountain pens manufactured in Zagreb in the mid-20th<\/sup> century by the Penkala\u2013Edmund Moster & Co. company which today are preserved at Peroklinika<\/a>, one of the oldest workshops for repairing fountain pens in Europe, founded back in 1941.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
