On 21 and 22 November 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted a scientific conference commemorating the 500th<\/sup> anniversary of the passing of Marko Maruli\u0107 (1450-1524)<\/a>, \u201cthe father of Croatian literature\u201d and a distinguished European humanist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jointly organised by NSK and the Croatian Language and Linguistics Institute<\/a> with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Youth<\/a> and Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a>, the conference was held as part of the Year of Marko Maruli\u0107<\/a>, Croatia\u2019s nationwide programme marking the great anniversary under the auspices of the Government of the Republic of Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a welcome address by the NSK Director General Professor Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107 and subsequent addresses by the Head of the Institute Dr \u017deljko Jozi\u0107 and President of the conference\u2019s Programme and Organising Committee and also the Head of the Institute\u2019s Department of the History of Croatian Dr Marijana Horvat, the conference was opened by the Croatian Minister of Culture and Media Dr Nina Obuljen Kor\u017einek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young academics giving new life to the verses of \u201cthe Croatian Dante\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The conference kicked off with the reading of Maruli\u0107\u2019s verses given by the students of the Zagreb University\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Lara Rami\u0107, Eva Horvat and Iva Buljevi\u0107. Reading \u201cthe Croatian Dante\u2019s\u201d verses in Croatian, Latin and Italian, they symbolically linked the very origins of the Croatian language and literature and younger generations, whose interest in Croatia\u2019s written heritage is vital for keeping this invaluable legacy alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference programme featured presentations by distinguished experts on Croatian language, literature, culture and heritage who covered a wide range of themes and presented Maruli\u0107\u2019s heritage from the point of view of the development throughout history of the Croatian language, significance of Maruli\u0107\u2019s works in the context of female writing and Croatian musical heritage, even as the source of Croatian military terminology, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maruli\u0107\u2019s Judita<\/em> \u2013 one of the cornerstones of Croatian language and literature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The focus of a larger part of the conference presentations was Maruli\u0107\u2019s 1521 epic poem Judita<\/em>, the work which earned him his central place in the history of the Croatian language and literature and whose 1522 edition<\/a> NSK preserves as one of the greatest treasures of its Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a>, which this year celebrates the 130th<\/sup> anniversary<\/a> of its founding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In six cantos written in Chakavian, one of three major dialects of the Croatian language (along with Shtokavian and Kajkavian), Maruli\u0107 reached for the biblical story of Judita (Judith), a brave Jewish widow who saved her people from the Assyrian general Holofernes, to poignantly address the threat that his native town, Split<\/a>, was facing from the Ottoman invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysing the unique verse characteristic of Croatian cultural space which Maruli\u0107 used, along with a complex versification scheme and the lexis that he employed, the conference participants also looked at the impact which Maruli\u0107\u2019s legacy has had on the development of the Croatian language and presented the projects and initiatives in this context relying on digital technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference participants had the opportunity to see Judita\u2019s original 1522 copy, along with other major works by Maruli\u0107 held by NSK, such as the world-famous <\/a>De institutione bene vivendi per exempla sanctorum<\/em> (1507)<\/a>, and Evangelistarium<\/em> (1516)<\/a>, both written in the late 15th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, they were presented with the Institute\u2019s 2024 three-tome edition (De imitatione Christi na trima stilizacijama hrvatskoga knji\u017eevnog jezika<\/a><\/em>) featuring the translation by Maruli\u0107 of De imitatione Christi<\/em> (Imitation of Christ<\/em>), the hugely popular 15th<\/sup> century devotional book, into Chakavian, one of the three major dialects of the Croatian language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closing of Croatia\u2019s Year of Marko Maruli\u0107<\/em> programme<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Library\u2019s and Institute\u2019s Marko Maruli\u0107 conference was held as one of the events closing the rich Year of Marko Maruli\u0107 programme, which included several previous conferences and various events organised in schools and libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closing the part of the Year\u2019s programme featuring exhibitions and musical and theatrical performances will be the staging in December of the opera rendering of Judita<\/em>, composed by the Croatian composer Frano Para\u0107, at the Prince Regent Theatre in Munich (Prinz Regent Theater<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
