By 22 November 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will be hosting the exhibition taking place as part of the 2024 Croatian Book Month<\/a> as a way of marking the 70th<\/sup> anniversary of the publication of the first issue of Modra lasta<\/a><\/em>, Croatia\u2019s longest-running teenage magazine (Dragi Lastane!<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition, which NSK organised in cooperation with the <\/a>\u0160kolska knjiga<\/a> publishing company, Croatian School Museum<\/a> and Croatian Association of School Librarians<\/a>, opened on 5 November 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a welcome address by the NSK Director General Professor Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107, who emphasised the legendary magazine\u2019s pivotal role in stimulating creativity and spreading knowledge among countless generations of young readers, the present visitors were addressed by Dr Ante \u017du\u017eul, the Chairman of the Board of the \u0160kolska knjiga company, which has published Modra lasta<\/em> since 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the addresses by the President of the Croatian Association of School Librarians Vanja Jurilj and Director of the Croatian School Museum Anita Zlomisli\u0107, the Museum\u2019s curator and library adviser Dr \u0160tefka Batini\u0107, who also authored the exhibition catalogue\u2019s foreword, elaborated on the magazine\u2019s place among other Croatian magazines for children throughout history. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition\u2019s preparation and its content, as well as the dynamic exhibition programme, spotlighting the crucial events and individuals in the seven decades of the magazine\u2019s publishing, was presented by Jozefina \u0106urkovi\u0107, editor at the \u0160kolska knjiga company and one of the exhibition\u2019s authors, after which the exhibition was opened by the Envoy of the Croatian Minister of Culture and Media and head of the Ministry\u2019s programme aimed at the <\/a>popularisation of culture and art among children in remote Croatian regions (Ruksak (pun) kulture<\/em>) Maja Zrn\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastan \u2013 the \u201cbig brother\u201d to Croatian teenagers throughout the decades<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spotlighting Lastan, the magazine\u2019s hugely popular agony uncle, the exhibition is featuring the most representative of the magazine\u2019s issues throughout the decades, a documentary on the magazine\u2019s history by Irena \u0160kori\u0107 and other content illustrating all the transformations and stages that Modra lasta<\/em> has gone through so far. Also, it gives an overview of the iconic magazine\u2019s development from its first issue to its current form from the perspective of the contribution that a great number of dedicated professionals in various fields made to it since its inception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modra lasta<\/em><\/strong> in the NSK collections \u2013 and much more<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Library holds in its collections<\/a> all the popular magazine\u2019s issues<\/a>, which have been a sort of a \u201cteenage bible\u201d for adolescents in Croatia since 1954. Apart from workshops for primary school children and roundtable discussions, the exhibition programme will also include a <\/a>symposium for school librarians and teachers on the significance of teen magazines and magazines for children<\/a> in stimulating creativity and popularising reading among children and young people as well as in terms of their potential as an immensely useful teaching aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition, authored by Jozefina \u0106urkovi\u0107, Vanja Jaji\u0107, Melita Povalec and Ana Pehar, from the \u0160kolska knjiga publishing company, was organised as part of the NSK project authored by the Head of the NSK Marketing and Communications Section Maja Priselac and NSK Library Adviser for School Libraries Kristina Romi\u0107, with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
