On 2 July 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted a special get-together held as part of the 13th<\/sup> Miroslav Krle\u017ea Festival<\/a>, the 2024 edition of the annual cultural festival commemorating Miroslav Krle\u017ea (1893-1981)<\/a>, one of the most distinguished, world-famous Croatian writers and thinkers of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After an introductory address by the NSK Director General Professor Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107, the Festival was presented by its author and director Goran Matovi\u0107, who donated to the Library the posters of the Festival\u2019s previous editions. Designed by Boris Bu\u0107an, Mirko Ili\u0107 and other Croatian distinguished visual artists, the posters represent a valuable acquisition to the Library\u2019s Print Collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme included an inspired reading of Krle\u017ea\u2019s poetry given by Croatian stage and screen actress Antonija Stani\u0161i\u0107 \u0160peranda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miroslav Krle\u017ea Festival and NSK together guarding Krle\u017ea\u2019s legacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Festival\u2019s programme and Krle\u017ea\u2019s manuscripts related to it preserved in the Library\u2019s Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a> were presented by Dr Lada \u010cale Feldman from the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a>, Dr Suzana Marjani\u0107 from the Zagreb Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research<\/a> and the Head of the Collection Dr Irena Gali\u0107 Be\u0161ker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having started on 28 June, the Festival features a number of theatrical performances and follow-up programmes and will traditionally close with Breakfast Party \u00e0 la Krle\u017ea, an early morning shindig starting at the time of Krle\u017ea\u2019s birth (7 July, 7.00).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krle\u017ea\u2019s messages amid efforts to avert global threats to world peace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Addressing issues arising from the current global circumstances in particular burdened by the ongoing armed conflicts threatening global peace, the Festival spotlights the messages in this context from Krle\u017ea\u2019s famed 1922 collection of stories (Hrvatski bog Mars<\/em>, \u201cThe Croatian God Mars\u201d)<\/a> and draws on Krle\u017ea\u2019s powerful writing to emphasise the futility of suffering inflicted on humankind as a consequence of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krle\u017ea\u2019s invaluable manuscript archive among NSK treasures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In accordance with Krle\u017ea\u2019s own wishes and owing to Dr Kre\u0161imir Vrane\u0161i\u0107, who executed Krle\u017ea\u2019s will, the NSK Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a> preserves Krle\u017ea\u2019s manuscript heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Becoming part of the Collection in 1988, Krle\u017ea\u2019s manuscripts were unsealed in 2001, upon the expiry of a 20-year moratorium which Krle\u017ea requested on in any way surveying or handling that material. In 2003, upon cataloguing the manuscripts in collaboration with The Miroslav Krle\u017ea Institute of Lexicography<\/a> and with the assistance of the leading Croatian experts on Krle\u017ea and his work \u2013 Zoran Kravar, Velimir Viskovi\u0107, Vlaho Bogi\u0161i\u0107 and Krle\u017ea\u2019s bibliographer Davor Kapetani\u0107 \u2013 the Library published a special catalogue<\/a> making available all data about this particularly valuable part of Krle\u017ea\u2019s legacy (Rukopisna ostav\u0161tina Miroslava Krle\u017ee<\/a><\/em>).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
