On 26 April 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted a special programme celebrating the inscription of a centuries-old Croatian script on <\/a>Croatia\u2019s registry of cultural property<\/a> as intangible cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaining its official status as Croatia\u2019s protected intangible cultural heritage in November 2023, the script has been in use since the 11th<\/sup> century in Poljica<\/a>, Croatia\u2019s historical region to the south of Split, between the \u017drnovnica and Cetina rivers, from which the script takes its name (polji\u010dica<\/em>, meaning \u201cthe Poljica script\u201d, in Croatian also known as polji\u0161ka bosan\u010dica<\/em>, polji\u0161ka azbukvica<\/em>, arvatica<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining forces in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Organised by The Poljica Alliance (Savez za Poljica<\/a>), owing to whose enthusiasts and the representatives of the Srinjine Primary School the script has been officially recognised, the programme opened with the welcome address by the Library\u2019s Director General Professor Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107. After an address by the Envoy of the Mayor of Zagreb and Head of the Zagreb Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage Conservation Lana Kani\u017eaj, a distinguished member of the Alliance Dario Radovi\u0107 presented the Alliance’s efforts for the preservation of the Poljica script and other segments of Poljica’s rich cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Featuring a presentation by the President of the Alliance Ante Mekini\u0107 about the history of Poljica, which particularly boasts its legacy of a sort of a rural democracy as the 11th<\/sup>-19th<\/sup>-cenutry Principality of Poljica<\/a>, and about the history, use and the development of the Poljica script by the Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Mateo \u017dagar, the programme also included the performance by mezzosoprano Terezija Kusanovi\u0107 of a part of the famous Croatian opera spotlighting Poljica\u2019s 16th<\/sup>-century heroine Mila Gojsali\u0107 and an innovative presentation by the students of the Jure Ka\u0161telan Secondary School in Omi\u0161 putting the Poljica script in the context of contemporary hairstyling art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Poljica Statute \u2013 an invaluable treasure<\/strong> in NSK’s collections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Standing out among the resources related to Poljica\u2019s cultural heritage displayed as part of a one-day exhibition which the Library put on as part of the celebration was the 1670 transcript preserved in its Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a> of The Poljica Statute<\/a>, whose first articles date back to 1440. Having been considered by some as one of the possible sources for Thomas More\u2019s Utopia<\/em> (1516), this historic Croatian legal document has been translated into English, German, Russian and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other material featured as part of the exhibition included valuable items from the Library\u2019s Map<\/a>, Music<\/a> and Print<\/a> collections on or illustrating the Poljica script, the historical region in which it originated and the history of its development and use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
