On 3 July 2026, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the 15th<\/sup> edition of the Miroslav Krle\u017ea Festival<\/a>, celebrating the legacy of one of Croatia\u2019s greatest 20th<\/sup>-century writers and thinkers and taking place in Zagreb<\/a> and Koprivnica<\/a> by 10 July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Festival\u2019s longtime partner, the Library organised its traditional get-together, whose programme includes the exhibition of Krle\u017ea\u2019s manuscripts preserved in the NSK Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A unique look into Krle\u017ea\u2019s legacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After a welcome address by the NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107, the Festival\u2019s Director Goran Matovi\u0107 also greeted the present visitors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other programme participants included the Head of the NSK Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection Dr Irena Gali\u0107 Be\u0161ker, Professor at the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a> Lada \u010cale Feldman, Dr Suzana Marjani\u0107, from the Zagreb Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research<\/a>, and Pavle Bon\u010da, from The Miroslav Krle\u017ea Institute of Lexicography<\/a>, whose discovery of Krle\u017ea\u2019s unknown dramatic text in the Collection was one of the highlights of the Festival\u2019s 2023 edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following a debate on Krle\u017ea\u2019s lasting impact on Croatian literature and culture and the relevance of his texts in the context of current global developments, the programme\u2019s visitors had a unique opportunity to see manuscripts for his works Journey to Russia<\/em><\/a> (Izlet u Rusiju<\/em>), The Glembays<\/em><\/a> (Gospoda Glembajevi<\/em>), On the Edge of Reason<\/em><\/a> (Na rubu pameti<\/em>) and others. Preserved as part of the Library\u2019s holdings<\/a> in accordance with Krle\u017ea\u2019s express wish and vital for understanding Krle\u017ea\u2019s oeuvre, the manuscripts and other material in his NSK archive have been available to the public since 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival\u2019s rich programme taking place by 10 July<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Opened on 28 June with a premiere of Aretej<\/em><\/a>, the last play which Krle\u017ea managed to finish and a highly complex and provocative dramatic text addressing issues surrounding the (social) responsibility of intellectuals, the very purpose of humanism and an individual\u2019s position in times of violence and political and other threats to freedom, the Festival is taking place by 10 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year also hosted by the University of Zagreb\u2019s Academy of Fine Arts<\/a>, Zagreb Youth Theatre<\/a>, Josip Ra\u010di\u0107 Modern Gallery<\/a> and the Croatian State Archives<\/a>, the Festival is organised with the support of the City of Zagreb<\/a>, Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a>, Zagreb Tourist Board<\/a> and the City of Koprivnica<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
