The programme with which the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) traditionally joins the Miroslav Krle\u017ea Festival<\/a>, commemorating a giant of Croatia\u2019s 20th<\/sup>-century literature and one of its greatest intellectual figures, will be held in the Library\u2019s side lobby on 3 July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Festival\u2019s 15th<\/sup> edition, taking place in Zagreb<\/a> from 28 June to 7 July and on 10 July in Koprivnica<\/a>, will again present a rich programme, featuring events ranging from roundtables and debates to exhibitions and stagings of several Krle\u017ea\u2019s works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating 25 years since the unsealing of Krle\u017ea\u2019s manuscripts archive in NSK<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the Festival\u2019s longtime partner, NSK will again host a programme spotlighting Krle\u017ea\u2019s archive which the Library holds. Along with a get-together in which the Festival\u2019s Director Goran Matovi\u0107, Head of the NSK Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection Dr Irena Gali\u0107 Be\u0161ker, Professor at the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a> Lada \u010cale Feldman, Dr Suzana Marjani\u0107, from the Zagreb Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research<\/a>, and Pavle Bon\u010da, from The Miroslav Krle\u017ea Institute of Lexicography<\/a>, will discuss Krle\u017ea\u2019s profound impact on Croatian literature and culture, it will include a one-day exhibition of Krle\u017ea\u2019s manuscripts in the NSK collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added to the Library\u2019s holdings<\/a> in 1988 in accordance with Krle\u017ea\u2019s express wish, the archive is preserved as part of the NSK Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection<\/a>, where it has been available to the public since its unsealing in 2001, upon the expiry of a 20-year moratorium which Krle\u017ea requested on surveying or handling the archive\u2019s material. The programme\u2019s visitors will have a unique opportunity to see a selection of Krle\u017ea\u2019s autographs such as those for his works Journey to Russia<\/a><\/em> (Izlet u Rusiju<\/em>), The Glembays<\/a><\/em> (Gospoda Glembajevi<\/em>), On the Edge of Reason<\/a><\/em> (Na rubu pameti<\/em>) and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dynamic platform for a lively dialogue with Krle\u017ea\u2019s legacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Other Zagreb-based Croatian cultural institutions also hosting the Festival this year are the University of Zagreb\u2019s Academy of Fine Arts<\/a>, Zagreb Youth Theatre<\/a>, Josip Ra\u010di\u0107 Modern Gallery<\/a> and the Croatian State Archives<\/a>, where the Festival\u2019s preopening will be held on 18 June with a roundtable thematising Aretej<\/a><\/em>, the last play which Krle\u017ea managed to finish. Addressing issues surrounding the (social) responsibility of intellectuals, the very purpose of humanism and an individual\u2019s position in times of violence and political and other threats to freedom, the premiere of this highly complex and provocative Krle\u017ea\u2019s play will be the highlight of the Festival\u2019s official opening on 28 June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
