From 14 to 16 June 2026, the Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) and member of the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL)<\/a> Executive Committee Dr Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107<\/a> took part in CENL\u2019s this year\u2019s Annual General Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hosted by the National Library of Luxembourg (BnL)<\/a>, the meeting brought together CENL members, who analysed the Conference\u2019s activities in the previous year and adopted the related documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining forces in safeguarding Europe\u2019s cultural heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The highlights of the meeting\u2019s first day were talks by the Director for Democracy at the Council of Europe<\/a> Matja\u017e Gruden (Custodians of Cultural Memory: Importance of National Libraries in Safeguarding the Cultural Heritage of Europe<\/em>), Director General of the Europeana<\/a> Foundation Harry Verwayen (When AI Challenges Europe \u2013 Joining Forces through the Data Space for Cultural Heritage<\/em>) and by the founder of Cybersecurity Redefined<\/a> and co-founder of FORESHAPE<\/a> Annika W\u00e4genbauer (Collaboration as a Shield: Safety and Security for Cultural Heritage Institutions<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme included presentations by the representatives of as many as 20 national libraries and the presentation of reports by CENL Network Groups<\/a> AI in Libraries, Books and Audiences, Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and National Libraries\u2019 User Spaces and Services. The group discussions that followed featured debates on issues central to the activities of national libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An audience with H.R.H. <\/a>Grand Duchess St\u00e9phanie<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As part of the meeting\u2019s accompanying programme, members of the CENL Executive Committee and the representatives of Luxembourg\u2019s national library had an audience with H.R.H. Grand Duchess St\u00e9phanie<\/a>. Headed by the Chair of CENL Frank Scholze, the delegation presented to the Duchess CENL\u2019s mission and activities<\/a>, emphasising the challenges which CENL\u2019s member libraries are currently facing and the ongoing initiatives focusing on the preservation of Europe\u2019s documentary heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, as part of a guided tour the meeting participants visited the Kirchberg Arboretum<\/a> and learned more about Kirchberg<\/a>\u2019s architecture and art. The tour programme included a visit to the Dr\u00e4i Eechelen<\/a> museum and its permanent exhibition spotlighting the Fortress of Luxembourg<\/a>, which this year marks 500 years of history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
