On 29 October 2026, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will be hosting an international symposium on the less known Croatian translations of the Bible (Hrvatski biblijski prijevodi na marginama<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jointly organised by the Library and the Croatian Language and Linguistics Institute<\/a> for the purpose of  presenting this invaluable part of Croatia\u2019s cultural heritage not only to researchers but to the general public as well, the symposium will be held as part of NSK\u2019s this year\u2019s Heritage at Hand at CroAtrium<\/a><\/em> programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Precious heritage \u2013 finally coming out of the shadows<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Croatian translations of the Bible are a particularly significant part of Croatia\u2019s cultural heritage which played a vital role in the development of Croatian literacy and written culture. However, this unique treasure trove includes texts which have so far unjustifiably remained in the shadow of notable Croatian translations of the Holy Scriptures. Written throughout centuries, they comprise works of the Croatian Glagolitic tradition<\/a>, translations into Croatian historical literary languages and modern translations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NSK and the Institute\u2019s experts, along with those from the University of Zagreb\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a>, Faculty of Political Science<\/a> and Catholic Faculty of Theology<\/a>, Old Church Slavonic Institute<\/a>, Czech Academy of Sciences<\/a>, University of Rijeka\u2019s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences<\/a>, The Biblical Institute Zagreb<\/a> and Catholic Faculty of Theology in \u0110akovo<\/a> will introduce these hidden gems of the Croatian tradition of Bible translations to the symposium participants and give them an overview of what has so far been established about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Croatian translations of the Bible in Croatia\u2019s national library collection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The symposium\u2019s programme (Croatian version only)<\/a> will include the exhibition of the Croatian translations of the Bible preserved in the NSK Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection<\/a>, one of\u00a0Croatica<\/a>\u2019s four most valuable sub-collections. Singled out among them in a presentation of the Head of the Collection Dr Irena Gali\u0107 Be\u0161ker will be the translations published in Urach, Germany, which between 1561 and 1564 became the centre of Croatian Glagolitic printing. \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NSK launched Heritage at Hand at CroAtrium<\/a><\/em> in 2025 as a year-round programme focusing on the promotion of the national library collection<\/a> which the Library curates. After six successful events in the programme\u2019s first year, its this year\u2019s edition has so far presented Croatica<\/a>\u2019s musical<\/a> and cartographic<\/a> heritage, along with prints<\/a>, a recently acquired valuable personal archive<\/a> and works of Croatian translational literature<\/a> preserved as part of NSK\u2019s holdings<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
