The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) is presenting Marin Getaldi\u0107 \u2013 400 years later<\/em> (Marin Getaldi\u0107 \u2013 400 godina poslije<\/em>), an exhibition spotlighting the legacy of Croatia\u2019s greatest mathematician and physicist at the turn of the 17th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a welcome address by the NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stri\u010devi\u0107 at the exhibition\u2019s opening, a Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)<\/a> and the Head of the Academy\u2019s Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science Vjekoslav Jerolimov gave a brief overview of Getaldi\u0107\u2019s achievements and their relevance to both Croatian and European science. The Head of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media<\/a>\u2019s Directorate for Archives, Libraries and Museums Anu\u0161ka Deranja Crnoki\u0107 also greeted the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legacy of an internationally acclaimed Croatian scholar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition was presented by its author, Scientific Adviser at the Academy Dr Marijana Bori\u0107, who particularly emphasised the importance of bringing the story of Getaldi\u0107\u2019s life and legacy to the general public, especially to younger generations. The opening programme also featured a performance by actor and student at the University of Zagreb\u2019s Academy of Dramatic Art<\/a> Lav Novosel, who gave an inspiring reading of excerpts from Getaldi\u0107\u2019s works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from Getaldi\u0107\u2019s works and selected academic and popular resources thematising his life and accomplishments, the exhibition material also includes the instruments that he constructed and used in his research. A particularly valuable part of the display, these artefacts \u2013 similar to his mirror preserved at the National Maritime Museum<\/a> in London \u2013 embody the experimental nature of Getaldi\u0107\u2019s research and thus a marked departure from the methodology of the Renaissance period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relevance and progressiveness of his earliest ideas were recognised by Fran\u00e7ois Vi\u00e8te, \u201cthe father of modern algebraic notation\u201d, who encouraged Getaldi\u0107 to publish his work. Sharing the very forefront of the scientific debates of his age soon afterwards, Getaldi\u0107 subsequently carried on a lively correspondence with Galileo, Christopher Clavius, Christopher Grienberger, Paul Guldin and other greats of world science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getaldi\u0107\u2019s works in NSK\u2019s collections digitised<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Displayed at the opening were the original copies of the great scholar\u2019s works preserved in NSK\u2019s collections<\/a>, including De resolutione et de compositione mathematica, libri quinque<\/a><\/em>, his most significant writing. Published posthumously, in\u00a01630, it was read by Descartes, which in itself speaks volumes about the ideas that Getaldi\u0107 conveyed in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held as part of the NSK Manuscripts and Old Books Collection<\/a>, it has been digitised during the exhibition\u2019s preparation and made available along with other Getaldi\u0107\u2019s works in the Collection on the NSK Digital Collections<\/a> website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offering a synergy of several perspectives on Getaldi\u0107\u2019s works, the exhibition display fuses interactive and multimedia content with artwork inspired by Getaldi\u0107, bringing his biography and oeuvre closer to the audience in a dynamic and interesting way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
