From 11 to 26 June 2026, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will be hosting Marin Getaldi\u0107 \u2013 400 years later<\/em>, an exhibition dedicated to Croatia\u2019s greatest mathematician and physicist and the pride of Dubrovnik<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prepared in consideration of the fact that while Getaldi\u0107\u2019s name is widely known among the Croatian public, the exact extent of his contribution to science is still insufficiently recognised, the exhibition has been organised as another chapter of the Library\u2019s cooperation with the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)<\/a> on the Academy\u2019s project aimed at the popularisation of the greatest scholars in Croatian history (Upoznajmo hrvatsku znanstvenu ba\u0161tinu<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing Getaldi\u0107\u2019s life and legacy closer to modern audiences<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Authored by the Academy\u2019s Scientific Adviser and head of the project Dr Marijana Bori\u0107, the exhibition presents Getaldi\u0107\u2019s life and intellectual legacy not only to researchers but also to the general public, particularly wishing to reach the younger generations. Along with experts from several fields, artists also took part in the exhibition\u2019s preparation, which synergy has produced a display offering interactive and multimedia content bringing Getaldi\u0107 closer to the audience in a dynamic and interesting way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Getaldi\u0107\u2019s works and selected academic and popular resources thematising his life and accomplishments, the exhibition visitors will also be able to see the instruments that he used in his research. As a particularly valuable part of the display, they bear witness to Getaldi\u0107\u2019s basing his analyses in physics on conducting experiments and mathematical methods and in this way heralding the modern approach to research in the natural sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The achievements of an outstanding scholar \u2013 from a perspective of art<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The exhibited items additionally highlight the connection of math and physics which made the methodological core of Getaldi\u0107\u2019s research and represented a marked departure from the research methods characteristic of the Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition also brings a unique interpretation of Getaldi\u0107\u2019s life and work from a perspective of art, featuring the first busts of Getaldi\u0107 and other artwork inspired by his biography and achievements, owing to which the greats of science such as Galileo, Paolo Sarpi and Christopher Clavius referred to him in their works.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
