From 1 July to 31 August 2026, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will be hosting the Best Book Design from all over the World<\/em> exhibition, featuring the winning titles selected as part of the eponymous international competition<\/a> organised by the German Book Art Foundation (Stiftung Buchkunst<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marking the 30th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the competition\u2019s presence in Croatia through the organisation of the national best book design competition (Hrvatska lijepa knjiga<\/em>)<\/a> and 60 years since the Foundation<\/a>\u2019s establishment, the exhibition will be put on in the Library\u2019s grand lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty years of the Croatian national best book design competition<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the Croatian national best book design competition, which since 2024 NSK has organised in cooperation with the Croatian Designers Association<\/a>, Croatian titles are selected every year to be presented at two major book events in Europe \u2013 the Leipzig<\/a> and Frankfurt<\/a> book fairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the first includes the finale of the Foundation\u2019s international competition and the accompanying exhibition of the latest winning titles, the latter hosts the Book Art International<\/em> exhibition, also showcasing the world\u2019s finest examples of book design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Croatia\u2019s most successful titles so far<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to the success of best designed Croatian books as part of the Best Book Design<\/em> competition, three Croatian titles were shortlisted so far \u2013 the 1996 edition of The Marvelous Adventures and Misadventures of Hlapi\u0107 the Apprentice<\/em> (\u010cudnovate zgode \u0161egrta Hlapi\u0107a<\/em>), the classic of Croatian children\u2019s literature by a four-time Nobel nominee Ivana Brli\u0107-Ma\u017eurani\u0107, for design by Mihajlo Arsovski, a 1997 title thematising Pope\u2019s 1997 visit to Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sveti Otac Ivan Pavao II. u pastirskom pohodu 12. i 13. travnja 1997, Sarajevo, Bosna i Hercegovina<\/a><\/em>), for design by Zoran Filipovi\u0107, and Fiume Fantastika<\/a><\/em>, published in 2021, for design by Ma\u0161a Poljanec and Leo Kirin\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating the best of Croatian book design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Out of altogether 188 entries submitted during the latest edition of Croatia\u2019s national competition<\/a>, a six-member judging panel, with Senior Librarian and Curator at the NSK Print Collection<\/a> Vesna Vla\u0161i\u0107 Juri\u0107 acting as the Library\u2019s representative, selected 12 titles<\/a> to represent the greatest achievements in Croatia\u2019s book design in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the international presentation of the winning titles as part of the Leipzig and Frankfurt book fairs, all books selected as part of over 30 Best Book Design<\/em> national competitions are included among the holdings of the German Museum of Books and Writing<\/a>, operating as part of the German National Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
