On 5 March 2026, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) organised the first event of its 2026 Heritage at Hand at CroAtrium<\/a><\/em> programme, aimed at the promotion of Croatia\u2019s national library collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symbolically organised on the anniversary of the death of Croatia\u2019s internationally recognised female composer Dora Peja\u010devi\u0107, after whom the Croatian selection for Eurovision Song Contest has been named, the programme spotlighted the heritage preserved in music collections from a detective\u2019s point of view (Glazbene zbirke \u2013 detektivski pogled na glazbenu ba\u0161tinu<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opened by the Head of the NSK Music Collection<\/a> Dr Tatjana Mihali\u0107, the programme underlined the importance of music and music-related material preserved in libraries and other heritage institutions for understanding music and its creators. It presented the Collection\u2019s valuable holdings and its relevance in the context of the preservation of Croatia\u2019s musical heritage, placing emphasis on the significant role of researchers in uncovering and promoting its treasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A detective\u2019s perspective on the magic of music and its many secrets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Musicologist Domagoj Mari\u0107, himself a longstanding and passionate researcher of music collections, then addressed the present visitors, describing the excitement brought about by coming across various revelations, but also the challenges which he faces while digging through the secrets of musical heritage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He presented in his lecture the interesting details of his work and insights that he gained through his systematic research of Peja\u010devi\u0107\u2019s legacy, as well as that of Bo\u017eidar \u0160irola, another prominent Croatian composer in the first half of the 20th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He focused on items related to Peja\u010devi\u0107 and \u0160irola in the NSK Music Collection, which apart from \u0160irola\u2019s autograph scores holds several Peja\u010devi\u0107\u2019s letters, which afford us a glimpse of who she was both as a composer and a person. Mari\u0107 stressed these letters\u2019 particular value since they are the only ones which we know of that Peja\u010devi\u0107 wrote in the Croatian language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme included a performance of \u0160irola\u2019s and Peja\u010devi\u0107\u2019s works by mezzosoprano Sofija Cingula and pianist Ivan Bato\u0161 \u2013 a composition which Peja\u010devi\u0107 set to Liebeslied<\/em>, a poem by Reiner Maria Rilke, and two \u0160irola\u2019s pieces set to verses by Croatian poet Dragutin Domjani\u0107 (Brv\u010dica<\/a><\/em>, Fala<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 80 years of safeguarding and promoting Croatia\u2019s music<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1945, the NSK Music Collection currently holds around 17,000 volumes of printed music and over 3,000 volumes of manuscript music scores. Among its music recordings, which at the moment include some 24,000 record releases, 5,800 cassettes, 11,000 CD releases and a number of born-digital music releases, The \u010capka Music Collection (Fonoteka \u010capka<\/a>) stands as exceptionally valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to material related to Peja\u010devi\u0107 and \u0160irola, the personal archive of the author of the first Croatian opera Vatroslav Lisinski<\/a> and similar archives of many other distinguished Croatian composers such as Blagoje Bersa<\/a>, Ivan Zajc<\/a>, Ivana Lang<\/a>, etc. represent the Collection\u2019s greatest treasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Library\u2019s Sounds of the Past<\/a> website offers access to Croatia\u2019s earliest music recordings preserved in the Collection, while the rest of the Collection\u2019s digital items are available on the NSK Digital Collections<\/a> website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next Heritage at Hand<\/em> presentation of the Croatica<\/a><\/em> collection has already been scheduled for April \u2013 we look forward to your visit to another of our heritage get-togethers again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
