The history of NSK, the National and University Library in Zagreb, Croatia\u2019s largest library, spans more than four centuries. From its beginnings as the library of the Jesuit grammar school in the Upper Town of Zagreb to its current, modern location<\/a> and role, NSK has been systematically developing its collections<\/a> and strengthening its position in Croatia\u2019s society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, NSK is one of Croatia\u2019s major cultural and research institutions and the central point of the Croatian national library system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1607<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Arrival in Zagreb<\/a>, Croatia\u2019s capital, of the Jesuit order and the establishment of the Jesuit grammar school with an accompanying library<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1669<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By the Charter of King Leopold I, the Jesuit grammar school acquires the status of the Academy and becomes Academia Zagrabiensis<\/em>, the forerunner of today\u2019s University of Zagreb<\/a>, which today celebrates its Day on 3 November, commemorating the 1671 validation of its status as a university by the Croatian Parliament<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1776<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the disbanding of the Jesuit order, Academia Zagrabiensis<\/em> continues with its provisional activities until 1776, when it becomes the Royal Zagreb Academy of Sciences <\/a>(Regia scientiarium academia Zagrabiensis<\/em>) and the former Jesuit library is made the new Academy\u2019s integral part<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1777<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Royal Zagreb Academy library receives and extensive collection of historical material including 757 book volumes and 50 manuscripts by bequest from clergyman Adam Baltazar Kr\u010deli\u0107, who stipulates in his deed of gift that the donated material must be made available to the public<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1816<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The library significantly grows in national and public importance through the introduction of legal deposit regulations, entitling it to a free copy of all publications of the University of Pest<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1837<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Legal deposit regulations start applying to the entire territory of Croatia and Slavonia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antun Kukuljevi\u0107, who acted as the head of all schools in Croatia, changes the library\u2019s name into Nationalis Academica Bibliotheca<\/em>, thus adding to its role as the Zagreb Academy\u2019s library that of the national library, in which dual capacity the library has been operating to the present day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1874<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following the discontinuation of the Royal Zagreb Academy of Sciences\u2019 work and the founding of the Franz Joseph I Royal University in Zagreb, the library becomes part of the University, continuing to act in its capacity as a national library<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1913<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With over 125,000 volumes, the library moves from the present-day building of the University of Zagreb into an art nouveau architectural masterpiece in Zagreb\u2019s Marko Maruli\u0107 square \u2013 designed by Rudolf Lubynski, it was the first building in Croatia, but also in this part of Europe, built specifically to house a national library<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1988<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The laying of the foundation stone of the library\u2019s new building, made necessary by the rapid growth of the library\u2019s collection, whose nearly 2 million items at the time greatly exceeded the capacity of the library\u2019s building in Marko Maruli\u0107 square, designed to house 500,000 volumes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1995<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The opening of the library\u2019s current building, designed by Marijan Hr\u017ei\u0107, Davor Mance, Zvonimir Krznari\u0107 and Velimir Neidhardt, the so-called \u201cglass cube\u201d, as the library is frequently referred to in architectural terms, on 28 May, as part of the celebrations of the fifth anniversary of Croatia\u2019s independence<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Owing to the library\u2019s having being made the seat of Croatia\u2019s 2020 presidency of the Council of the European Union<\/a>, one third of the library\u2019s building left unfinished since 1995 is finally completed, making the library\u2019s entire premises ready to be used in fulfilling the library\u2019s tasks<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
