“BioBlitz and libraries”: NSK and Zagreb Library Association launch green libraries programme spotlighting the importance of biodiversity

The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) and the Zagreb Library Association (ZKD) have launched BioBlitz and libraries, a green libraries programme bringing together the general public and researchers for the purpose of promoting the vital importance of the preservation of biodiversity. By organising the programme, NSK’s User Services Department and the ZKD Citizen Science Working Group (GZUK) intend to mobilise Croatian libraries in organising BioBlitz events – intensive field studies aimed at collecting data over a period ranging from several hours to an entire month on the species inhabiting parks, gardens and forests in on near their communities. On 30 October 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted one of the programmes closing Citizen-Enhanced Open Science in Southeastern Europe Higher Education Knowledge Hubs (CeOS_SE), a 2022-2024 research project aimed at including European citizens in pan-European efforts focusing on open science. The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) joined the 2024 Croatian Science Festival by organising a special citizen science programme targeting secondary school students and focusing on the preservation and promotion of Croatia’s musical heritage. Jointly prepared by the Library’s User Services Department and its Music Collection and spotlighting intelligence as this year's Festival's theme, the programme was held on 22, 23 and 25 April 2024.
