Exhibition spotlighting St Jerome, author of Vulgate and son of Dalmatia, on view at NSK by 4 Apr 2024

Exhibit at the exhibition spotlighting St Jerome.

On 21 March 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the opening of an art exhibition featuring works by 24 distinguished Croatian artists inspired by St Jerome, a native and patron of Dalmatia and one of the most prominent figures of Croatia’s and Europe’s cultural heritage as the author of the Vulgate.

Organised by Split-Dalmatia County, with the University of Split acting as the co-organiser, and remaining on view in the Library’s side lobby by 4 April 2024, the exhibition spotlights artwork created as part of the art colony held as a way of marking the 30th anniversary of the County’s founding. Offering a unique opportunity for seeing this prominent historical and cultural figure – as well as the patron of the Croatian Glagolitic tradition and librarians – through the eyes of contemporary artists, the exhibition draws attention to the importance of safeguarding his heritage, which greatly affected Croatia’s cultural history through the impact it had on the Croatian greats such as Juraj Šižgorić, Marko Marulić, Petar Zoranić and Matija Vlačić Ilirik.

The programme of the exhibition’s opening included addresses by the NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stričević, Emeritus Professor Josip Belamarić, from the Croatian Institute of Art History, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Split Professor Dragan Ljutić, Prefect of Split-Dalmatia County Blaženko Boban and Croatian Minister of Culture and Media Dr Nina Obuljen Koržinek, who opened the exhibition.
