Acting as the partner in the e-Universities project, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) has started setting up Bukinet, a cloud-based system for Croatian academic libraries.

By opting for Alma/Primo VE, a unique library services platform developed by the Ex Libris Clarivate company, and securing the related three-year subscription which along with NSK will be used by other 82 Croatian academic libraries, the Library successfully undertook one of the activities it has been tasked with as one of the partners in the e-Universities project, funded as part of Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021-2026 and aimed at upgrading the digital infrastructure of Croatia’s higher education system and research sector.

Other partners in the e-Universities project, whose holder and main beneficiary is the Croatian Academic and Research Network (CARNET), are the University of Zagreb Computing Centre (Srce) and Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education (AZVO).

Launched on 10 January 2025 and comprising the setting up of the Alma Network Zone, conversion of bibliographic records in the UNIMARC format to the MARC 21 format and the migration of over 3 million bibliographic records, NSK’s implementation project aimed at the transition of Croatian academic libraries to the Alma/Primo VE library services platform is expected to enable a fully operational inclusion of all the participating libraries in the Bukinet platform by November 2025.

The advantages that Bukinet is expected to bring include:

  • unified access to print, electronic and digital resources
  • scalable library system open for the subsequent inclusion in it of new libraries (Network Zone)
  • development of cloud-based shared library services
  • efficient library networking, development of the Croatian National Union Catalogue of Academic and Research Libraries and cooperative bibliographic description
  • coordinated collection development and data analytics-based library operations
  • implementation of the latest bibliographic standards, such as LRM and BIBFRAME
  • cyber and GDPR-related resilience
  • availability of an advanced discovery service offering enhanced user experience.
