In addition to a wealth of literature in all scientific fields and disciplines, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) makes available to researchers a wide range of services, information sources and digital research resources.

Bibliometric services

As part of its bibliometric services, NSK issues bibliometric reports for researchers applying for academic promotion.

Subject search

Through the NSK Ask a Librarian service, our subject librarians will assist you with writing your thesis, research paper or conducting research for your project by compiling a list of resources available as part of library catalogues, bibliographies, electronic databases and other relevant online sources.

Inter-library loans

Using our inter-library loans service, you may request items or chapter/article scans of items from other libraries, in Croatia and abroad.

By the end of 2025, we provide access to RapidILL, a fast and cost-effective interlibrary loan system facilitating the processing and management of requests for article and book chapter scans.

Study rooms

Apart from study spaces in our spacious reading rooms, ten study rooms located on Floor 4 are also available to our registered members.

The services is available to members of registered research project teams, the academic staff of the University of Zagreb, persons employed in the fields of science and culture, researchers, writers and journalists, postgraduate students and undergraduate students preparing a registered undergraduate dissertation.

E-resources

NSK coordinates the acquisition of international scientific resources for the Croatian academic community and researchers and provides access to platforms such as Web of Science and Scopus as well as to e-journals published by renowned academic publishers such as Wiley, IEEE, JSTOR, etc.

Apart from international peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, books and dissertations, the available resources include other relevant scientific and specialised material such as reports, patents, research data, reviews, audio-visual material, etc.

All e-resources to which NSK subscribes, both at the national level and the level of the University of Zagreb, may be accessed via the Library’s eResources website.

Research repositories

You may search the final papers, undergraduate dissertations, Master’s and doctoral theses accepted at all Croatian universities via the Croatian Digital Theses Repository (ZIR) and Croatian Digital Dissertations Repository (DR).

Research papers, journal articles, books, teaching materials, conference papers, research-related visual, audio and audiovisual material, research data, surveys, virtual collections and other content created by the academic staff and students of the University of Zagreb are available via the University of Zagreb Repository.

NSK Doctoral and Master’s Theses Collection

Located on Floor 1, the Collection offers access to doctoral and Master’s theses defended by Croatian researchers at universities in Croatia and abroad.

Additional research resources

NSK holdings

NSK holds in its collections nearly 3.7 million items as an invaluable information source, equally relevant to both academic and private research and all fields and themes.

NSK digital collections

The Library’s digital resources may be accessed on the NSK Digital Collections website, whose content is categorized by type of resource:

  • Books (ranging from incunabula to e-books)
  • Manuscripts (codices, letters, manuscript maps, music manuscripts)
  • Visual resources (drawings, prints, posters, postcards)
  • Music (manuscript and sheet music, digital scores, music recordings)
  • Cartographic material (maps, manuscript and engraved maps, town plans, blueprints, atlases).

Another useful research resource are the Library’s online exhibitions, available on the NSK Online Exhibitions website, where currently over 50 exhibitions thematise a wide array of subjects, historical figures, events and periods.

Historical Croatian newspapers and journals

The Library’s most used research resource is its collection of historical Croatian newspapers and journals, whose print editions may be accessed in the NSK Periodicals Reading Room.

Digitised newspaper titles published from the beginnings of journalism in Croatia to 1900, such as Kroatischer Korrespondent (1789), the oldest newspaper title in the NSK collection, as well as Il Regio Dalmata – Kraglski Dalmatin (1806-10), the first newspaper with texts in the Croatian language, are available on the Croatian Historical Newspapers website.

The digital copies of the earliest Croatian academic and professional journals may be accessed on the Croatian Historical Journals website.

Croatian Web Archive

Archiving the Croatian web domain (.hr) since 2004, the Croatian Web Archive (HAW) provides access to diverse online content making an integral part of Croatia’s contemporary culture and scientific output.

Citizen science

By organising a wide range of citizen science activities, such as workshops, webinars and similar programmes for researchers, librarians and the general public, we actively promote citizen science and contribute to the participation of the public in scientific research.

Also, as part of various joint initiatives and in collaboration with our partners and various international institutions, we assist libraries, cultural institutions, non-profit organisations, research associations and other entities in organising their own citizen science programmes.

Researchers may request the organisation of a special webinar addressing issues involved in the inclusion of the general public in scientific research (Sudjelovanje javnosti u znanstvenim istraživanjima) specifically tailored to their requirements.
