Join us in celebrating NSK Day 2024!
22 February 2024

On 22 February 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) will host the celebration of this year’s Library’s Day.
The National and University Library in Zagreb Day, NSK Day, is marked in memory of 22 February 1483, the day of the printing of the first book in the Croatian language, a ‘Missal by the Law of the Roman Court’ (Misal po zakonu rimskoga dvora; Missale Romanum glagolitice), which the Library preserves as one of its greatest treasures in its Manuscripts and Old Books Collection. Also, the Library’s logotype, the letter of the angular Glagolitic alphabet Iže, i.e. the transliterated Latin letter ‘I’, has been taken over precisely from this historic missal, the oldest incunabulum in the Croatian language and the first book in Europe not printed in the Latin alphabet, the date of whose publication since 2019 has also been celebrated as the Croatian Glagolitic Script Day.

Starting at 13.00 in the Library’s grand lobby, the celebration will also mark the Library’s 417th anniversary as the central Croatian library and the main library of the University of Zagreb as well as the central institution collecting and preserving Croatia’s written heritage and one of Croatia’s major cultural, research and educational institutions. Its programme will include the National and University Library in Zagreb Awards ceremony and a performance by the Flam-A Duo percussion ensemble.

Ushering in the NSK Day celebration on 20 and 21 February 2024 will be NSK Doors Open Days, the Library’s traditional programme during which the general public will again have the opportunity to make special guided tours of the Library, learn more about its collections and activities, and take part in special presentational programmes.
