Facilitating open science: NSK becomes part of OPERAS infrastructure

As a result of its efforts to bring its work into line with the principles of open science, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) has joined OPERAS, a research infrastructure supporting open scholarly communication in social sciences and humanities in the European Research Area (ERA).

Aimed at fostering open science in social sciences and humanities, OPERAS provides an efficient, sustainable and inclusive system helping researchers to overcome the current fragmented state of scholarly communication in the European research landscape and enabling their easier access, dissemination and validation of research results in Europe and beyond.

Other Croatian research and academic institutions included in the OPERAS infrastructure are the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the University of Zagreb Computing Centre (Srce), while the University of Zadar serves as the OPERAS National Node for Croatia (OPERAS-HR).

NSK’s efforts to foster open science

The Library’s eResearch Division, operating as part of the NSK User Services Department, coordinates the licencing and procurement of electronic resources at the national level, concludes transformative contracts with academic publishers and enables Croatian researchers to publish open access.

Also, NSK manages the Central System for Bibliometric Analyses, Croatian DOI Office and assigns URN:NBN identifiers for digital objects. Apart from actively contributing to the development of Croatia’s research infrastructure through the Digital Academic Archives and Repositories (DABAR) platform and Portal of Croatian scientific and professional journals (Hrčak), it takes part in the activities of various international networks and initiatives (CENL, CLARIN-ERIC, DARIAH-HR, ECSA, Europeana, IFLA, LIBER, IIPC, RDA Europe and many others).

It is particularly dedicated to promoting citizen science through including Croatian citizens in research projects and it regularly organises educational programmes for librarians and researchers.
