2024 NSK exhibition of prints by Dražen Trogrlić.

On 11 December 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) hosted the presentation of a print portfolio by an award-wining Croatian painter, sculptor and graphic artist Dražen Trogrlić (Galaktički ples / Galactic dance) which will be displayed in the Library’s grand lobby by 19 December. 

Published by NSK, the portfolio’s 15 prints convey the author’s vision inspired by the immense and infinite galactic expanses.

The presentation opened with a welcome address by the NSK Director General Dr Ivanka Stričević and an introduction by the Head of the NSK Print Collection Tamara Ilić Olujić, who provided a brief overview of the Collection’s years-long fruitful cooperation with Trogrlić.

Trogrlić’s work was then presented by Dr Milan Pelc, from the Croatian Institute of Art History, who authored several analyses and reviews focusing on Trogrlić and his oeuvre, of which he gave an overview. Last, Trogrlić himself briefly addressed the present visitors and presented the latest of his portfolios published by the Library as well as his inspiration for its creation.

A sequel to a successful art-driven cooperation

The Library’s cooperation in 2024 with this distinguished Croatian artist, who has been enriching the national art scene for over 40 years and during that time proved himself skilful in working with a wide array of media, comes as a sequel to several previous successful similar collaborations. The NSK Print Collection has cooperated with Trogrlić since 1986, when the Library and the Varaždin City Museum jointly published Trogrlić’s linocut print portfolio (Iskušenja južnih mora [The temptations of the southern seas].

Since then, apart from the 2001 Trogrlić’s art monograph, published by the Library and the Klovićevi dvori Gallery, the Library and Trogrlić published another two portfolios (Povratak uoči odlaska [A return on the eve of leaving], 1987, with the Međimurje Museum in Čakovec acting as the co-publisher; Predavanje o dimovima [A Lecture on Smoke], 2006) and the 2023 art monograph (Crtež kao otkrivanje svijeta: radovi na papiru Dražena Trogrlića = Drawing as Discovery of the World: Dražen Trogrlić) in which Dr Pelc undertook the first ever comprehensive analysis of Trogrlić’s artwork on paper, a segment of his oeuvre persistently present throughout all periods of his work.
