“Mediterranea. Visions of an ancient and complex sea” exhibition on view until 2 Feb 2024

Invitation for the “Mediterranea. Visions of an ancient and complex sea” exhibition.

From 16 January to 2 February 2024, the National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) is hosting the Mediterranea. Visions of an ancient and complex sea exhibition, jointly organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Zagreb, Embassy of the Italian Republic to the Republic of Croatia and NSK.

Curated by Viviana Panaccia and featuring stunning material and installations as well as the satellite images provided by the most advanced space technology developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Telespazio and e-GEOS companies, the Mediterranea exhibition may be viewed in the Library’s side lobby, during the Library’s opening hours. Divided into three thematic units, it presents the history, peoples, myths, landscape, vegetation and other fascinating features of the Mediterranean, along with bringing attention to its being one of today’s hotspots when it comes to climate change and calling for action in tackling the problem of plastic pollution, 7% of whose amount on the global level is burdening the Mediterranean, which makes less than 1% of the world’s global water surface.

The exhibition was opened on 16 January 2024 by the Director General of the National and University Library in Zagreb Dr Ivanka Stričević and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to the Republic of Croatia His Excellency Mr Pierfrancesco Sacco.

Also put on as a way of celebrating the friendship throughout history between Italy and Croatia, the Mediterranea exhibition highlights the two countries’ centuries-long bond in making part of the Mediterranean civilisation.
