NSK, the National and University Library in Zagreb, has fostered the tradition of safeguarding Croatia’s written heritage for more than four centuries, curating its treasures as CROATICA, the Croatian national library collection, whose development is NSK’s most important task.

Some of 3.6 million items held by NSK, the National and University Library in Zagreb.

Based on specific form- and content-related criteria, CROATICA brings together the following book and non-book materials (printed, documentary, digital, online, electronic):

  • works by Croatian authors
  • works originated in Croatia
  • works fully or partially in the Croatian language
  • works fully of partially relating to Croats, Croatia and Croatian natural and cultural heritage.

General CROATICA collection

General CROATICA collection is developed through legal deposit, as well as by purchase, donation and exchange.

Legal deposit items make the basis of CROATICA, Croatia’s national library collection, as well as of the Croatian national bibliography, and contribute to the development of Croatian Digital Library.

General CROATICA collection is divided into physical and online subcollections assembling printed (Croatian books, foreign Croatian books, books on Croatian Homeland War, serial publications, official publications, ephemera, dissertations and other theses) and non-printed material (resources in microforms, electronic publications, online content, e-theses, digitised material).

Special CROATICA collections

Special CROATICA collections assemble the most valuable and extremely fragile items of Croatia’s cultural heritage. The development of special CROATICA collections began with the inclusion in it of non-textual publications, such as prints, maps, music, etc., which our staff curate as part of the Library’s four special collections.
